Daytrippin’
Excursions in Plein Air Painting from the Delaware River Valley
July 8th – August 28, 2011
July 8th 5:30-8:30pm opening reception
En plein air is a French expression which means “in the open air”, and is particularly used to describe the act of painting outdoors.
Artists have long painted outdoors, but in the mid-19th century working in natural light became particularly important to the Barbizon school and Impressionism.
French Impressionist painters such as Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir advocated en plein air painting, and much of their work was done outdoors,
The Daytrippin’ show will feature the work of area artists who adventure into plein air to paint the landscapes of the Delaware Valley. These artists include members of Artsbridge, a Lambertville based arts organization and the Rancocas Plein Air painters. This artworks show in Trenton will represet a coming together of the atrists from upriver and downriver of NJ’s capital.
These artists often do their work in groups, adding a social component to the painting experience. The Artsbridge group calls themselves the River Rats and travels around Huntington, Mercer and Bucks county in search of fine scenes to render.
The Rancocas Valley Plein Air Painters’ are a group of artists who enjoy painting and photographing cityscapes and landscapes on location. Its mission is to facilitate a group environment with a sense of security, support and camaraderie. It began in 2001 and meets regularly once a week beginning early Spring to late Fall. The Rancocas group paints in places like Burlington, Delran and Medford.

Art All Night 2011 seeks 350 Volunteers for its 5th annual arts festival
Art All Night 2011 seeks the assistance of approximately 350 volunteers during its 24-hour exhibit on the weekend of June 18-19, 2011. The entire event is volunteer led and driven, from planning to execution. Art All Night is largely unique, bringing together a diverse group of individuals from all over the State of New Jersey as well as Bucks County (PA) interested in building community and awareness for the local arts, artists and the revitalization of the city of Trenton.
A variety of positions are available, ranging from day-of event volunteers to positions focusing on the preparation preceding the event and exhibit set-up and break down. Day-of event volunteers will be needed to work in 3 hour shifts, primarily focusing on the art and exhibits. Others will be needed to manage information tables, parking and merchandise sales. Volunteers who sign on to help in the weeks prior to the event can help with marketing and building projects (kiosks and erecting gallery walls) as well as advocate for the city of Trenton to its underserved communities through the I AM Trenton Community Foundation.
There is a pressing need for captains in the following areas; Media Distribution, Parking and Trash and Recycling.
The Media Distribution Captain will be responsible for coordinating the distribution of marketing materials for AAN 2011 and leading a team of volunteers in executing the distribution plan. Marketing materials will include posters, lawn signs, banners and postcards and Media Distribution Volunteers will be needed to provide coverage in the following communities in New Jersey, Mercer County Townships, Lambertville and Bordentown and the towns of Morrisville, Yardley and New Hope in Pennsylvania.
The Parking Captain coordinates parking for the event and ensures that parking is regulated and staffed according to needs and established policies of the venue. The captain will also arranges for necessary signage, flags, barricades and maps needed for the event. In addition, he/she will supervise and direct volunteer attendants and schedule shifts according to the needs of the event.
If you are you interested in reducing Art All Night’s carbon footprint, a Solid Waste Management and Recycling Captain is needed to initiate the recycling and solid waste reduction plans for AAN 2011. The captain will be responsible for project planning, implementation, training volunteers, monitoring and modification at the event and working with outside waste and recycling vendors. Lead volunteers in also providing information to the attendees and increase awareness of recycling and clean-up efforts and programs.
Volunteers will also receive a variety or perks including a free AAN 2011 t-shirt and pre-event party! So, if you are interested in devoting some of your time to a great cause, surround yourself with wonderful people and have an amazing time doing it all, visit our web-site at www.artworkstrenton.org/artallnight or e-mail volunteeraan@gmail.com to learn more about the various opportunities available and how you can help.
Artworks, Trenton’s downtown visual arts center and sponsor of Art All Night, has announced the selection of veteran arts administrator Lynn Lemyre to be its new Executive Director. Lemyre, a resident of Mount Holly, previously directed Burlington County’s visual arts gallery and programming and is a former Executive Director of Main Street Mount Holly.
“It has been a dream of mine to oversee a dynamic community arts center like Artworks,” said Ms. Lemyre. “I am a firm believer in the power of the arts to improve and enrich the lives of all members of the community, and I look forward to continuing Artworks’ long tradition of providing creative and accessible programming to the Trenton community, and partnering with other organizations to the benefit of the city and the region,” she said.
“We had so many qualified applicants for the job but Lynn was the clear choice with her breadth of experience in the New Jersey visual arts and non-profit world. We feel privileged to have her, and know she will take Artworks to the next level,” said Lauren Otis, Chairman of the Artworks Board of Trustees. Among other accomplishments, Ms. Lemyre helped found Mount Holly’s mural arts program and ran Burlington County’s Arts in the Park, an annual arts festival which drew 10,000 attendees. She is also an accomplished and widely exhibited painter.
“This is an exciting time at Artworks, and for the arts in general in Trenton,” said Mr. Otis. “Lynn has joined us at a great time. The Artworks headquarters building in downtown Trenton is poised to undergo a full facilities upgrade this summer thanks to a great joint effort with the City of Trenton, and we have just launched a fully redesigned web site,” said Mr. Otis. “Our fifth annual Art All Night extravaganza is just around the corner, taking place June 18 and 19, education programming has been revitalized, and we continue to participate with other local organizations in a range of wonderful partnerships such as for the Trenton Mural Arts Project,” he said.
“I love Artworks’ space, and what the organization has accomplished so far,” said Ms. Lemyre. “I’m looking forward to being a part of it all, and I can’t wait for Art All Night!” she said.
For more information, please contact Lynn Lemyre at Artworks, at 609-394-9436, or by email at director@artworkstrenton.org. Artworks, Trenton’s downtown visual arts center, is located at 19 Everett Alley, Trenton, NJ 08611.
